Bellatrix Lestrange and the Deathly Hallows

If I had my way, this is what the series will be called. I hate Harry Potter. Don’t get me wrong, I like the series, but the title character I really detest. He’s got this matyr/victim complex that I can’t stand.

Bellatrix Lestrange on the other hand… Best. Character. Ever. She is absolutely bonkers, and I love it! And there is honestly no better person to play her than the beautiful Helena Bonham Carter, easily my favourite actress.

So when it comes to cosplay, for me, there’s really only one character worth cosplaying, and that’s Bella. (To be fair I did cosplay Cho Chang during OOTP, but that was purely out of convenience. Can’t stand that girl.)

Back to the topic at hand: Bellatrix Lestrange. I’ve got roughly about two and a half weeks til the film opens here in Singapore, and that’s two and a half weeks for me to complete my Bella.

I know I reallllly should have started this earlier and save myself last minute stress, but well, that wouldn’t be me now would it?

This is me as Bellatrix from last year’s Deathly Hallows Part 1 premiere.

I haven’t done anything extra to it yet so this is still how it stands now: about 50% complete at this point.

Here’s what I have to fix/make/get in two weeks:

1. Sleeves

My sleeves from the previous costume weren’t the best (and they were a bit too short too) so I’m gonna try remaking them.

2. Bird skull necklace

A silver bird skull necklace which I never got around to making the last time around. I think I have a block of Sculpey lying around somewhere so I’m gonna attempt to make it from scratch!

3. Skirt

I found this amazing amazing fabric during one of my trips to People’s Park Complex in Chinatown!

It’s not actually the material of her skirt (which I believe is a very lightweight linen), but its so fantastic I’m certain Bella would have worn it in an instant if she had seen it.

I’m gonna take some artistic license here. ^^

But right now its just two metres of cloth that I’ve got to get sewn into a skirt. Hopefully Fatimah will be able to help.

4. Dark Mark Tattoo

Another crucial thing I didn’t have in version 1. I think the easiest would be to cut out a stencil which I’ll be able to use over and over again.

Another option would be to get a temp tattoo but that would last for at least a week and I don’t really want to go around with a dark mark on my forearm!

5. Swirly patterns

Bella’s dress has lots of silver swirly patterns all over it, and again, I never got around to doing these the first round so I’m making sure it gets done now.

I’m thinking, silver fabric marker. The only part of her dress I’ll omit this is the skirt. With the texture and material of my current fabric I think doing silver swirls is a bit of an overkill.

So yep, I’ve got 5 things to complete in two weeks. I hope its not too much!

Oh and I haven’t got my wand yet but I’ve already bought off Noble Collection and all I can do now is wait and pray it arrives before the movie!!

    Cheers :)

I happened upon your post as I searched and searched for intricate details about Bellatrix’ dress, sleeves, to be precise. I have a severe costuming addiction and Bellatrix fits so very nicely under my umbrella of characters. (Last year I was Mirana from Alice in Wonderland, the previous year, Helena’s Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd. I told myself no Tim Burton, Helena, Johnny Depp, etc. costumes this year; yet, how could I pass up Bella? How?)

Natch, I am about six months behind you in your designing as I am putting together my Hallowe’en costume: Wand? Check. Dress? Check, with the exception of altering the sleeves. Boots? Check. Hair? Check, naturally curly and Helena wild! Corset? Check. Skull necklace? Awaiting from Thailand :) Dark Mark? Clueless as to how to henna stain myself. :D

Thanks for the fab post and bit more detail so desperately needed! Huzzah!

    CiaoCiao!
