Bellatrix’s Sculpey skull project – Part 2

July 16, 2011 3 Comments by Tiramisue

So here’s Part 2 of my Sculpey skull project for Bellatrix Lestrange. Part 1 is here if you haven’t read it yet!

Once more, here are the ingredients.

  • Block of Sculpey polymer clay
  • Basic clay tools
  • Oven
  • Pendant holder
  • Sandpaper
  • Black and Silver acrylic paint
  • Black and Chrome airbrush paint
  • Airbrush

The next step after baking was to sand it down. One, sanding allows you to smoothen out any irregularities from your sculpting, and two, your now rougher surface will take the paint better.

Okay I didn’t really do a very good job of sanding because it was kinda rushed.

First try: Folklore acrylic paint

Black as a base and silver over it, gave this really solid metallic cast iron look. Turned out a lot better than I’d expected!

Finished it off with a clear coat of semigloss.

Pure evil.

Second try: Airbrushed chrome

I don’t have an airbrush so I had a friend’s help for this. We stripped the paint off one of the skulls and airbrushed it instead. Absolutely love this effect! The chrome paint does wonders to the whole look.

Left to dry

And here’s one final comparison shot between the two skulls.

They’re far from a perfect replica, but I’m pretty happy with the result (given that this is only my second time working with Sculpey).

I definitely prefer the chrome skull. It was also the better sculpted version. Although I must say the dark metallic skull does exude more evilness than the chrome skull (which is a little too shiny and happy lol).

Both are great and I’ve worn both as Bellatrix, but I think the chrome one is gonna get more wear-time haha!

Resources

Some fantastic posts from other bird skull makers that were a great help to me on this project!

  • www.curiousgoods.com – I just love her interpretation of Bellatrix’s necklace!
  • www.cutoutandkeep.net has a page where someone made the same necklace out of a real bird skull. It’ll be good if you have an overabundance of bird skulls in your area!

If you’re looking to buy this necklace…

  • www.crazypigdesigns.com – If you have that kind of money to burn, this is where Bellatrix’s original skull came from.  £234.00
  • astrophe-designs.webs.com – Pretty cool looking as well. Far more wallet friendly at $32.99.
  • www.etsy.com – Do a search for ‘Bellatrix Lestrange necklace’, or simply ‘bird skull necklace’ and you should get tons of results.

I’m petite too! Gap, Dillard’s and Belk’s have cute dresses. Also try Aeropostle, some of their clothes fit too.
